Units get experience by winning battles in colonies, outposts, or relics. Each unit that accumulates experience will get stronger. Experience can easily change the outcome of a battle that would normally be hopeless. For example it takes 30 experience for an infantry unit to gain a level, 50 experience for a vehicle to gain a level, and 70 experience for a mech to gain a level.
